The King George III cannon is mounted on a brick and marble plinth that has 'Gunpowder Square' inscribed around the base. There is a plaque attached to the carriage that reads:

It is assumed that Gunpowder Square was opened on this date and, by London standards, is a very modern location!
There is no history to be found as to why the cannon was placed here and it was probably a link between gunpowder and cannon that gave some one the idea.
