This is the remains of Stalybridge Town Hall and Market that was opened on 30th December 1831, three years after Stalybridge received royal assent to become an independent town administered by a board of commissioners.

The building in Greek Revival style had a market hall on the ground floor with the civic town hall upstairs.
It remained in use as a town hall until the 1970s when Stalybridge became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in 1974 due to local council re-organisation.
The building was largely demolished in the 1980s, with the entrance portico left standing. Behind the portico is a small garden area and some columns from the rear of the building have also been left in place.
The town hall was an English Heritage Grade II
listed building. These days it is the remaining portico that is listed, but the actual description on their website still describes the complete building.
