This is an official tourism centre in New Zealand's Northland tourist region. There is plenty of parking at the i-Site, which also offers picnic tables, toilets, souvenirs and a gallery of work by local artists and artisans. Across the street is beautiful Opononi Beach and a vista across Hakianga Harbour to the impressive North Head sand dune.
In terms of local attractions, the sand dune is one. We witnessed a dune buggy climbing the sand but more people were taking boat shuttles across the harbour and toboganning down the dune. The area is very famous for the Waipoua Forest which contains many native species including the largest kaura tree still standing - very impressive!
The beach that is across the highway from the i-Site offers great swimming and great sand for playing. We didn't go in the water but the sand was perfect for digging and burying. Others were just soaking in the sun.
