Mama is showing her affection for her young cub but the youngster may have liquid nourishment on his mind. The figures are life-size and appear to have been carved of two blocks of wood joined through the adult's torso. From appearances the wood may be driftwood.

Hello,
Thank you for being a longtime visitor of the zoo! Many of us are sad not to see the bears out front. I even have pictures of my adult children as little ones sitting on the that very bear. Unfortunately the statue has deteriorated beyond repair and has been decommissioned as a piece of art with the artist’s permission. There are no current plans for the sculpture. We are considering plans for its replacement however. The Point Defiance Zoo Society is fundraising for a project to have a bronze sculpture of ET our beloved walrus, who passed away two years ago, commissioned. That sculpture could replace the entry bears.
Thank you for supporting your zoo.
