These springs and markers are located along a local park are to teach visitors about the unique geography of this area. Steamboat Springs was supposedly named by French Fur trappers in the 1860s for a hot spring near the Yampa River that sounded like a steamboat. Travelers in the early 1900s visited Steamboat Springs in the summer months for the natural hot springs and vast hunting and fishing opportunities. There are more than 150 mineral springs in the area.

This is the 'Sulphur Spring' with a temperature of 72°F (22.22 C) and a pungent sulphur smell situated along the Yampa River.
