Daniel Fowler was a very well-known early Canadian Artist.
Born in London, he emigrated to Upper Canada in 1843 due to health, a burgeoning family, and dissatisfaction with teaching and art.
He settled here on Amherst Island, and was determined to make a go of it as a farmer. He struggled in the early years to make ends meet, but always retained his love for Amherst Island, as it reminded him of his youth.
He returned to the UK in 1857, and after visiting his family and friends, was filled with renewed determination to continue his art.
A chance showing of some of his work in Toronto eventually led to his success in this country.

Fowler's art was centered on three main categories: Landscapes, dead game and flowers.
Landscapes of Amherst Island are his most famous works.
Fowler was appointed as a Charter Member to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1880. These charter members were required to donate one piece of art, which became the nucleus for the National Art Collection.
Fowler died in 1894.
