Planted in 1870, this massive Moreton Bay Fig Tree, graces the front lawn of Russell's first police station building and is only a few feet from the shores of the Bay of Islands.
Russell, formerly known as Kororareka, was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. The village was the site of many non-friendly encounters between British settlers and native Maori. This gnarled tree has survived 143 of New Zealand's 173 years of existence and seen a lot.
