Wilder Penfield, fondateur et, pendant plus de 25 ans, directeur de cet institut, a atteint une renommée internationale en neurochirurgie et en neurologie. Ses travaux novateurs sur l'épilepsie, à l'origine d'une nouvelle méthode d'intervention chirurgicale et de nombreuses publications scientifiques, ont mis en lumière de multiples aspects du fonctionnement du cerveau humain et lui ont valu partout les plus grands honneurs. L'Institut, combinant de façon exceptionnelle équipement hospitalier et laboratoires scientifiques, est devenu un centre international d'enseignement, de recherche et de traitement spécialisé consacré aux troubles du système nerveux.
Wilder Graves Penfield
Wilder Penfield, the founder and, for over 25 years, director of this Institute, was a world leader in neurosurgery and neurology. His pioneering work on epilepsy, which resulted in a new surgical procedure and numerous scientific papers, contributed to the understanding of the workings of the human brain, and brought him high honours in Canada and abroad. His Institute, a unique association of well-planned hospital facilities and scientific laboratories, became a renowned centre for teaching, research and treatment relating to disorders of the nervous system.
