As was common during the reign of Queen Victoria the building is ornate as well as functional.
It is made of stone and brickwork and has an ornate stone relief sign with the words Post Office bookended with V R (Victoria Regina, Latin for Queen Victoria).
Ornate signs like this are no longer common and can be contrasted with the modern plastic signs visible in the photo of the building itself.
