Idola Saint-Jean
Idola Saint-Jean
During the inter-war period, Idola Saint-Jean emerged as a dominant figure in the struggle for women's suffrage and the reform of the Civil Code in Quebec. Despite strong opposition from government, the clergy and many suffragettes, she engaged in "shock feminism" demanding equal rights for women. A committed educator and journalist, she also fought for social justice and championed human rights, world peace and the cause of female workers. Her activism and sharp criticism of patriarchal power made a remarkable contribution to the advancement of women in Canada.
