Dès le débuts du XVIIe siècle, les Jésuites occupaient une place de choix dans l'histoire du Canada en tant que missionnaires, explorateurs, seigneurs et éducateurs. En 1635, ils fondaient le premier collège au pays à Québec. Après la Conquête, les autorités britanniques empéchèrent tout recrutement dans la communauté et s'emparèrent de ses biens. Invités à revenir au Canada en 1842, les Jésuites se consacrèrent à l'éducation. Ils établirent des maisons d'enseignement dans plusieurs grandes villes, dont le collège Sainte-Marie, qui se trouvait jadis ici.
The Company of Jesus
As missionaries and explorers, seigneurs and educators, the Jesuits have played a key role in shaping Canada's history since the early 17th century. In 1635 they founded the first college in the country at Québec. After the conquest, the British authorities forbade the recruitment of members into the Order and seized its properties. Invited to return in 1842, the Jesuits focused their efforts on education, establishing colleges in several Canadian cities, among which was Collège Sainte-Marie which once stood on this site.
