Hôpital-des-Sœurs-Grises
Bâti en 1765, sur les vestiges de l'hôpital des Frères Charron, cet édifice est ce qui reste de l'ancien Hôpital Général de Montréal. La communauté des Soeurs Grises, fondée par Mère d'Youville, y tint jusqu'en 1871 un refuge pour les malades et des déshérités. La maçonnerie brute, les détails en pierre de taille et le toit en pignon de la partie centrale reflètent l'architecture fonctionnelle du XVIIIe siècle. Pour répondre aux besoins de la population, on a ajouté deux ailes au premier bâtiment durant le XIXe siècle. C'est de cet édifice où il est né que l'apostolat des Soeurs Grises s'est propagé graduellement à tout le Canada.
Grey Nuns' Hospital
This one surviving building of the old Grey Nuns' Hospital was erected in 1765 on the site of the earlier hospital of the Frères hospitaliers. Here, until 1871, the Sisters of Charity, founded by Mère d'Youville, tended the sick and dispossessed of Montréal, and from these beginnings extended their ministry across Canada. The centre block, with its rough masonry, detailed in dressed stone, and its gabled roof reflects the functional architecture of 1765. The two wings were added in the nineteenth century to meet demands for more space.
