The Getaway Outdoors chain evolved from the Ranger Camping chain late in 2010.
During the 1990s and early 2000s this store was my major source for camping equipment, as it was one of only two stores within about 20 kilometres of home.
When I retired from the workforce in 2003 my work-colleagues gave me a $100 Ranger Camping Gift Card as a parting gift, knowing my intention to continue Wandering Australia in my retirement. The WanderingMrs and I visited this store and chose two padded reclining folding chairs from their range of about 50 different designs and styles. We had to add $40 to the gift card, but we got an excellent pair of chairs.
Towards the end of our third annual five month long 'Climatic Refugee' journey I broke the arm on one of the chairs. By the time we were home the other arm had a crack in it. I returned to this store carrying the broken arm, and to my surprise was able to purchase a pair of replacement arms. The WanderingMrs insists that the arms were broken because I put too much weight on the end of the arms when pushing myself up, so I tried to put less pressure on them from then on.
Half way through our sixth annual five month long 'Climatic Refugee' journey I broke both arms on one of the chairs. Over the following month I visited over a dozen Outdoor Recreation Stores in about eight different towns, and was not able to buy replacement arms at any of them. I ended up buying another chair with similar qualities, but it wasn't as comfortable as the old ones. When we returned home I returned to this store again carrying the broken arm, but this time had to order the replacement arms, which arrived within two weeks.
In 2012 I broke another chair arm, this time only three weeks into the trip, but this time I repaired the arm with fibreglass. Two months later one of the arms on the other chair also broke, and I repaired that one too. Now that I've perfected the technique I should be able to repair any future breakages too.
This store provides a gas cylinder re-filling service and cylinder exchange service as well as selling new gas cylinders.
