King Country Energy owns and operates a hydro system incorporating four power stations located within the King Country region, the Kuratau hydro Station being one of them. It was commissioned in 1962 and has a Mean Annual Output of 29 GWh.
Water is piped from Lake Kuratau via the Kuratau Dam, down to the Power Station, Head: 64 metres. If it floods the spillway gates open and can allow up to 110,000 litres of water per second to pass through into the Kuratau River and on into Lake Taupo.

1.Kuratau Dam is an earth and rock dam, 36m tall, 70m long and 118m wide.
2.Everyday the Station generates 72 megawatt hours of electricity.
3.Up to 11,000 litres of water flows through the Station every second.
4.The Kuratau Station only takes one person to run it on a daily basis, although more are available if an emergency occurs.
