At 381 years old when felled about 1964, this tree took root in about 1583, the year that Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed the island of Newfoundland on behalf of England, marking the beginning of the British Empire.
1583 was also a good year for Spain, as Spanish admiral Santa Cruz defeated an armada consisting of Portuguese, French, and English ships off Terceira, one of the larger islands in the Azores.
The tree was 193 years old when the U.S. was born and 284 years old when Canada was born. Had the tree been still standing and alive, it would mark its 430th birthday this year.
