Ye Olde Curiosity Shop is a museum of oddities along the Seattle waterfront at Pier 54. There are many objects on display from human shrunken heads to the Lord's Prayer on a grain of rice. This museum and gift shop has been in business since 1899 and in addition to housing numerous displays inside, it also houses a few totem poles and an artillery shell outside, tucked way behind the inside corner of the front of the shop. There's a plaque hanging on the wall next to this shell that reads:
ARTILLERY SHELL This shell weighed 855 pounds when it was fired from Fort Worden, Washington some time before 1940. It flew seven miles to land on a nearby beach. |
There's a picture below the verbiage that shows soldiers sitting on a large cannon at Fort Worden during World War I. This cannon might have been the same gun that fired this shell. Fort Worden was an Army base from 1902 to 1953 when it closed. It is now a state park.
