It was originally built in 1845 for the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, which then amalgamated and formed the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1847.

Incorporated in the original cast iron is the date of 1845, in the middle of the bridge above the canal. On the north side of the bridge there is a plaque attached to some concrete superstructure saying that the bridge was restored in 1978.

Originally Dukinfield rail station was on top the bridge and the platforms extended over the side of the bridge. The station eventually closed and the platforms at the side of the bridge were demolished between April and June 1968.

These days the line is called the Huddersfield Line and carries trains between Huddersfield and Manchester. The line is operated by Northern Rail.

Not far from here on the north side of the bridge the Peak Forest canal has a junction with the Ashton canal at Portland Basin. Here there is a local history museum with plenty of parking.
