It was originally built in 1845 for the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, which then amalgamated and formed the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1847.

These days the line is called the Huddersfield Line and carries trains between Huddersfield and Manchester. The line is operated by Northern Rail.

Originally Dukinfield rail station was on top the bridge and the platforms used to extend over the side of the bridge. The station eventually closed and the platforms at the side of the bridge were demolished between April and June 1968.

The bridge was restored in 1978 and a date marker commemorating this was placed on the bridge above the original 1845 date plaque.
