First opened in 1984 as the Edmonton Space Science Centre then later the Edmonton Space and Science Centre, in 2001 it became the Odyssium and on May 2, 2005 it was again renamed the Telus World of Science.
The centre focuses on many branches of Science and Technology, featuring an eclectic mix of fascinating topics. We were there for a full half day and managed to miss a few exhibits that we now wish we hadn't. This is a very large and very well done piece of work, and well worth an allocation of half a day to a full day.
If current plans are carried out, the museum could soon triple in size. I suppose that would mean tours would then take about three days!!!
The exhibits:
Discoveryland - an interactive children's gallery
The Environment Gallery - highlighting ecology, conservation, alternative energy and weather.
The Forensics Gallery - demonstrating how crimes are solved by the scientific examination of clues.
The Health Gallery - a carnival-style exhibition revealing the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
The Robotics Laboratory - a program in which guests program pre-built robots to perform various tasks and missions.
The Space Gallery - an introduction to astronomy and astronautics.
The Explorer Gallery - hosting temporary travelling exhibits.
Facilities:
A 275 seat IMAX Theatre.
The large 250 seat domed Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre.
The Science Stage, featuring various live science demonstrations.
An Amateur Radio Station. (Ham Radio)
The DOW Computer Lab, featuring several electronic teaching tools.
An outdoor Observatory, usable weather permitting (above -15C), with seven telescopes, including a 16" Meade, a 7-inch Starfire refractor, and three solar telescopes.
And, of course, a Cafe and Gift Shop.
The museum also features educational programs:
From Wiki:
"Science in Motion Science in Motion is a feature at Telus World of Science-Edmonton that brings science programs and presentations to schools that are more than 100 km from the centre. Through experiments, demonstrations and hands-on activities Science in Motion makes science fun, dynamic and easy to understand. Science in Motion is a resource that meets the learning objectives set out in the Alberta science curriculum.
TransAlta Science Lab The TransAlta Science Lab is a fully equipped, hands-on, laboratory giving students an approach to science experiments that is both engaging and meaningful."
