Text of marker:

The construction of St. Joseph's Cathedral began in 1878 during the episcopacy of Patrick Moran, first Bishop of Dunedin 1869-1895.  The unfinished Cathedral was solemnly dedicated Sunday, 14th February 1886 by the Cardinal Archbishop of Sydney His Eminence Patrick Francis Moran, and the Bishops of Maitland, Adelaide, Welling, Auckland taking part with the Bishop of Dunedin in the ceremonies.

Architect for the Cathedral was Frank William Petre.
