It was built around 1845 for the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, which then amalgamated and formed the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1847.

These days the line is called the Huddersfield Line and carries trains between Huddersfield and Manchester. The line is operated by Northern Rail.

Cavendish Street that the bridge crosses is the main road between Ashton-Under-Lyne and Dukinfield. The base of the bridge is 4.4 metres (14 feet 6 inches) above the road surface.
