The original pole stood in front of a house named House that Makes a Noise, a large six beamed house owned by Gwiskunas, a member of the Those Born at Qadasgo Creek lineage of the Raven clan of the Haida.
The pole was also subject of a 1928 painting by Emily Carr misleading known as the "Weeping Woman of Tanu".
The top of the pole has three watchmen that call out warnings of approaching enemy canoes. The rings on their hats are symbolic of their status. Below them is an eagle, the crest of the Gwiskunas. Between the eagles wings is the head of a hawk or Owl. Below that is a hair seal that is caught in the eagles talons. The is the sea chief whose eyes fall out at night, his friends place them back in during the day so that he can see to eat. Then a frog facing downwards on the Sea Chief's chest.
Then their is a human grasping the tail of a killer whale whose dorsal fin is between the knees of another human. At the base is a sea bear who is swallowing a a sea mammal head first.
