The Esperance Cemetery was established in about 1896. The first recorded burial was that of Alfred Houghton on 22 January 1896 who passed away at the age of 43 years in Esperance. Sadly another early burial in the cemetery was that of the infant Lilly, daughter of an Afghan camel driver, who passed away on 25 October 1898 aged 2 days.

There are a number of denominational areas within the older section of the cemetery which include the Pioneer Section, Anglican Section, Uniting Church Section, Lutheran Section, Methodist Section, Peoples Church Section and Catholic Section. There are about 900 graves in this section of the cemetery.

The Esperance Cemetery's Lawn Section is the newer section of the cemetery, and as at 2012 there were over 1,000 graves there.

The Shire of Esperance manages a number of cemeteries throughout the district, including Esperance, Salmon Gums and Grass Patch.

Esperance is a large town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, on the Southern Ocean coastline approximately 720 kilometres east-southeast of the state capital, Perth.
