The Calder and Hebble Navigation was completed in 1770 and connected Sowerby Bridge with Wakefield. It mainly followed the River Calder and consisted of man made improvements to the river to make it navigable to transport goods between the towns.
The bridge is a single arch bridge extending over both the canal and the tow path. The base of the bridge is made of stone, but at some point the parapet has been changed to be made of brick. On one side of the bridge there is a modern concrete footbridge that has been added very close to it.
When the canal was first opened all the boats were pulled by horses using tow ropes. The bridge is on a slight bend in the canal and the original base of the bridge has marks on the arch where the tow ropes rubbed against the bridge and cut grooves into the stone work.
