The Calder and Hebble Navigation was originally completed in 1770 and connected Sowerby Bridge with Wakefield. It mainly followed the River Calder and consisted of man made improvements to the river to make it navigable to transport goods between the towns.
In 1828 an arm was added to the canal to join Salterhebble to Halifax. This bridge is at the start of the arm at Salterhebble and carries Wakefield Road over the canal.
Most of the arm to Halifax is now closed and it ends 1/2 mile away from here at Exley.
