The bridge itself carried the Brighouse to Halifax railway line for the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway. At this point it is crossing the Calder and Hebble Navigation.
These days it carries Northern Rail trains and the line is called the Caldervale Line because much of the route follows the River Calder valley. The train company’s franchise is due for renewal in April 2014.
The bridge is near a junction on the canal. The main arm goes through the locks at Salterhebble and on to Wakefield. The other arm originally followed the route of the railway to finish near Halifax station. However these days it ends at Exley.
