At a mere 1.54 acres, this is one of Oregon's smallest state park preserves, and is the home of a landmark that has influenced land surveying for all of Oregon (and beyond).
The park is located about 4 miles west of downtown Portland, and is the location where Oregon's 1st surveyor general, John B. Preston, pounded a stake that established the initial point (beginning spot) for all land surveying in Oregon and Washington. This initial point helps to establish township and ranges.
There is parking for about 7 cars, and a short paved asphalt walkway to a brick-lined pad that holds a marker that represents the "initial point" for surveying, as well as 3 dedicated benches. The walkway can be slippery and it is a bit steep. A few stairs at the end are also steep.
