"Lowry Air Force Base was named on 11 March 1938 in honor of Second Lieutenant Francis Lowry whose plane was shot down by German antiaircraft fire in World War I in which he flew as a forward artillery observer on 26 September 1918. Despite bad weather Lieutenant Lowry and his pilot in their Salmson 2A2 had attempted a photo-reconnaissance mission important to the Meuse-Argonne Offensive over Crepion, France. Lowry, who came from a prominent Denver family, was the first Denver aviator killed in wartime. He is buried in Fairmont Cemetery adjacent to the former Air Force Base." (from (visit link) )

Francis Brown Lowry was born in Denver on December 1, 1894. Despite bad weather Lieutenant Lowry, an aerial observer, and his pilot had attempted a photo-reconnaissance mission important to the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. (The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the final offensive of World War I.) Second Lieutenant Brown died September 26, 1918 when his plane was shot down over enemy lines near Crepion, France, by German antiaircraft fire.

He was originally buried in Argonne Cemetery in Romagne, France. In 1921 his remains were transferred to Denver's Fairmount Cemetery, adjacent to the land that was to become Lowry Field. Lowry's name was first used for an airfield in 1924, when the Colorado Air National Guard dedicated an installation in the vicinity of 38th Avenue and Dahlia Street, east of the present-day Park Hill Golf Club. This installation served the Guard until 1938 when it was inactivated. The new field was named Lowry Field on 11 March 1938 in honor of Second Lieutenant Francis Lowry. (from (visit link)

This slightly larger-than-lifesize statue of 2nd Lt. Francis Brown Lowry is clothed in the military garb of a U.S. Soldier during World War I (the Great War). He is in a field shirt, jodhpurs, boots and leggings. He wears a U.S. WWI-style helmet and has a satchel hanging diagonally off his right shoulder. He is holding a rifle with the butt on the ground (which is a replacement - the original was stolen many years ago). He is on a light gray granite plinth with a light gray stone behind engraved "[logo VFW] FRANCIS BROWN LOWRY, Post No. 501, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States", who donated this memorial.
