The mural commemorates the Great American Automobile Race from New York to Paris in 1908. There were six cars entered. This race was won by the American team including George Shuster, who hailed from Springville. They drove a 1907 Thomas Flyer from New York to San Francisco in a speedy 41 days! The entire trip, of which only three cars finished, took 169 days.

The mural was completed by a team of local artists (who at this time remain unknown) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mr Shuster's feat.

George Shuster was inducted in the Automotive Hall of Fame in October, 2010.

The Great American Automobile Race of 2008 was supposed to travel along much of the same route, but due to visa restrictions with China, had to be postponed.
