Calverley Cutting is the direct route from Calverley to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Apperley Bridge. It was created by the Thornhill family in 1856 to replace the old packhorse track which ran through Calverley Woods. The packhorses used to bring wool to the village where there were a number of houses where wool spinning was the main occupation, carried out in the upstairs rooms. The Thornhills intended to build superior housing but the development never went ahead. The remains of the old route can still be traced in Calverley Woods.

The problem then was that the bank to the north-west of Clara Drive was so steep, about 1:3, that horses could not negotiate it so the track became unused. It was, however renovated in 2010 and opened on 15th May 2010 by Ted Garnett J.P. and a stone plaque inscribed thus can be found on the right-hand wall shortly after entering the cutting from the Calverley end.

The bridge over the cutting is built of stone to a traditional design and carries Clara Drive, a linear develpoment of modern houses and bungalows. It is about 340m down the cutting track from the main road.
