Ngarunui is a magnificent black sand surfing beach, ideal for swimming, and is perfect for learning to surf or simply sunbathing on the sand. The given co-ordinates are for beach access off Wainui Road.
This beach is perfect for beach walking for those that like to get away from the crowds, as it is more remote and deserted away from the access track. You can walk several kilometres along the beach to the far end at the harbour entrance. There is access also at this end of the beach via Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive.
The beach can get quite busy in summer, obviously it will be busier nearer the parking access at both ends but the rest of the beach is all yours to discover. Find yourself a spot away from the crowds and enjoy flying a kite, writing messages in the sand and exploring. There are no shade trees along the beach so take a beach umbrella if you don't want to get scorched in the Kiwi sun.
The beach has an area patrolled by surf lifesavers (October to April) immediately in front of the southern access trail to the beach. There are public toilets and changing rooms near the main car park and at the end of the path to the beach. This wide sealed path is quite steep but take it slowly and admire the view.
Fishing is also popular here, and the best fishing at Ngaranui Beach is to be had at the northern and southern tips. The rocky headland at the southern end will often produce a good catch of trevally and snapper. Surfcasting into the harbour entrance is best while the tide is changing as there are strong currents here.
And at the days end there is no better place to be, strolling along the sand, the waves crashing onto the shore, whilst watching the sun drop into the water in a golden red fiery glow across the horizon.
Simply perfect!
