Papatowai was a permanent population of about 30 people. Most of the homes in the community are vacation/holiday homes referred to as cribs. The population of the community increases significantly around New Years Day and Easter. The community is located about halfway between the cities of Dunedin and Invercargill on the southeast coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
