Built in 1898, with the eastern portion added in 1899, this commercial building is located on the northeast corner of First and Locust streets, opposite the Thomas Hotel. The western half of the building has housed a series of taverns, a cigar store, and at the time of the historic district nomination, a cafe. The eastern half of the building was originally home to a furniture store; at the time of the historic nomination, it housed a ballet studio. Above the eastern end of the building are four of the building's original eight decorative "chimneys," similar to those seen on other historic buildings in downtown Oakland. Today, the Oakland Tavern continues to occupy the western side while an antiques shop is in the eastern half.
