The story behind the haunt:
Hidden deep within the shadows of Mt. Shepherd in Randolph County lies the rundown remains of the Hoover hill mining community. Well-known as a thriving mining town in the early 1900s, people from all over came to work in the mines until a horrific collapse brought the community to it knees in 1948. Buried alive in a large chamber of the mine were seventeen of the miners. The people of the community worked for weeks to try reaching the buried miners, but eventually gave up one by one until all hope was abandoned. Legend has it that the buried miners vowed to seek revenge on the community and anyone who ever dared to enter the property. Throughout the years, many reports have come from people in and around the area of strange sounds and lights coming from the mountain. Family pets have gone missing as well as several people throughout the years.
About the haunt itself:
The haunt is a medium size haunt for the area and seems to cover more area than X-Treme Fear and Castle of Horror. The walk through the haunt is self-guided. It takes close to forty minutes (depending on one's group) to go through the haunt up to the final area, a maze. If you go early in the season, you can take your time walking through the scenes and appreciate the detail. The maze is quite large. The top is open to the sky and several actors roam the area--equipped with chainsaws, of course.
The scenes aren't too bright or too dark and things don't repeat. The scenes are to theme and do not seem haphazard. You don't get that black light plastic feel, the scenes do not feel disjointed, and there isn't any unnecessary space between scenes. The walk through the haunt feels fluid. Customers who enjoy not knowing what to expect and creative creatures will enjoy this haunt. Those who like seeing Hollywood horror villains will not enjoy this. The front line isn't too long and there are very few holding lines throughout the haunt. If you pace your group properly and you visit towards the beginning of the season, you will not have to wait anywhere during the haunt.
The costumes are nicely done and themed for a haunt of this size. The workers seem to know what they're doing and have some freedom to move about the scene. The proprietor is enthusiastic and easy to approach during the season.
Haunt schedule and prices:
Mountain of Terror typically operates on Friday and Saturday nights from the last week in September through and including Halloween. The 2012 cost of admission was $15/person, which is just right for it being a medium size haunt in the area.
An ATM is on site and there is some food for sale in the small midway.
