Diana was the goddess of the hunt, the moon and birthing. She is often associated with wild animals and forested environments. She was said to have the power to control and talk to animals. She was born along with her twin brother Apollo and was the daughter of Jupiter and Latona. "As a goddess of hunting, Diana often wears a short tunic and hunting boots. She is often portrayed holding a bow, and carrying a quiver on her shoulder, accompanied by a deer or hunting dogs...." See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_(mythology) "She also acted as a fertility goddess, who helped women conceive and give birth to children. As Rome's contact with Greece grew in ancient times, Diana became increasingly identified with the Greek goddess Artemis. In time, Diana and Artemis became essentially identical. Most literary references to the goddess use her Roman name, Diana." See: http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Diana_(Roman_goddess).aspx

With respect to Diana the asteroid, it is described in Wikipedia as: "large and dark main-belt asteroid. Its composition is carbonaceous and primitive. It was discovered by Robert Luther on March 15, 1863, and named after Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt. 78 Diana occulted a star on September 4, 1980. A diameter of 116 km was measured, closely matching the value given by the IRAS satellite."
