The Invercargill Water Tower was completed in 1889. The water tower was designed by engineer William Sharp. The brick water tower is very ornate and was built during Victorian era when public works structures were often ornate. The tower has a square base with a hexagonal shaft cylindrical water tank on top. The tower measures 31.5m high and is a landmark for the city.
The tower is listed as a Category I structure on the New Zealand Heritage Register and is recognized by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) as an important part of New Zealand's engineering heritage.
