This crossing connects a quiet province of Thailand with a quiet state of Malaysia. The crossing itself is over the small Golok River. On the Thai side a huge building, where one walks not inside, but along the eastern side of the building, and is stamped out of the Kingdom. Then one humps oneself and bags (though it is possible to hire a motor bike driver, tuk tuk or taxi, to make the transit) past the immigration building, over the bridge, and to the Malaysian immigration office. This is equally large. The usual papershuffle, handled in the usual highly efficient manner one comes to expect, then, you are in Malaysia. Not much in the way of facilities on either side.

On the Thai side Sungai Kolok is a small town, with the usual range of service, but the Malaysian side seems to be little more than a congregation of buildings and services usually found at border crossings. This locale is a duty free zone, so, I am told, there is a lot of cross border wheeling and dealing, but I saw none of that on my weekday crossing. On the Malay side is a taxi stand, and a bus stop. Here you can travel to the nearby town of Kota Bharu (capital of the province). I am unsure if it is possible to travel further afield from here, I suspect not.

I crossed on a weekend, near midday, and the crossing was quiet. Just me and a handful of Malaysians heading homewards. Sleepy is the term that springs to mind. I did not take many photos. Due to the security situation (below), there were lots of police and soldiers standing around. They did not look like they wanted their photos taken.
