The planner was obviously a lover of The Bard and his works. It seems particularly fitting to me that the planner should locate his Shakespearean Streets here as this is a beautiful, mature middle class neighbourhood, set along the Columbia River, with miles of parks and walking trails along the river.

First known as Central Park, this area was surveyed in 1908 and subdivided into building lots. In 1938, the property was purchased by Columbia Parks Ltd. from Robert Somerville of Trail and Charles Mann of Toronto.

Lots were offered for sale in 1941 after a land sale bylaw was passed by council. Some development occurred in lower Sunningdale before it incorporated with the City of Trail on June 2, 1948.

During 1948, the upper bench of Sunningdale was developed by the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation for a post-World War II veterans' housing project. The first tenants moved into their new home on Monday, June 20, 1949. By 1951, there were 10 two-bedroom homes and 74 three bedroom homes. The present population is close to 1,000 inhabitants.

Coordinates are for Viola Crescent, the first encountered upon entering Sunningdale.

They are, in order from south to north:
Viola Crescent - the central character of "Twelfth Night".
Diana Crescent - of "All's Well That Ends Well".
Sylvia Crescent - of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona".
Olivia Crescent - in love with Cesario in "Twelfth Night".
Juliet Drive - the daughter of Capulet, title character in "Romeo and Juliet".
Portia Crescent - heroine of "The Merchant of Venice".
Isabella Crescent - the virtuous central female character in "Measure for Measure".
Hermia Crescent - in love with Lysander in "A Midsummer Night's Dream".
Celia Crescent - daughter to Duke Frederick in "As You Like It".
Regan Crescent - the cruel second daughter in "King Lear".
Nerissa Drive - Portia's maid in "The Merchant of Venice".
Mariana Crescent - the jilted fiancee of Angelo in "Measure for Measure".

If other, please explain::
Twelve of Shakespeare's heroines are now immortalized in aluminum as street signs. Possibly the "12" is symbolic of "Twelfth Night", or "What You Will".
