This hotel building, named for Sarah Thomas and constructed after the Oakland fire of 1899, replaced the original wooden hotel building erected on this site in 1878. The prominent location, at the corner of 1st and Locust streets, was across from the railroad depot. It is said that this hotel was the first south of Portland to feature hot and cold running water to each room.
