The bridge in use is the rebuilt bridge from 1968 widening. The M6 motorway stopped a short way further south up until 1971 and traffic either went up the A6 road to Scotland or up the A683, this road, to the north east of England. There is a bridge marked on a map of 1695, which would have been replaced by the 1735 rebuild.
The modern 1968 date is worked into the new stone parapet on the south side of the bridge in the pedestrian refuge. The bridge name is in the north side pedestrian refuge. Both refuges have the stones saved from the earlier bridge of 1735, with the 1735 notaries names listed.
The 1735 stones are grade 2 listed structures, not the bridge itself.
