Welcome and Darius D Farnum Mills, later Saranac Mills (built 1825 to 1835) in the village of Waterford, RI shared the river junctions with the canal and branched south and east to the Mills.
In 1836 a four-story brick mill, the #1 mill or "Mammouth Mill", was erected. The mill measured 400X51 fee and operated by three large breast wheels. The Saranac Dam and the mill power trench were likely constructed about 1836 for this new and very large mill.
The dam was built Daniel Simmons in 1856 to power the Waterford Mills. The Blackstone Canal and the Blackstone River intersected at this location. There was a small bridge used by horses that towed the barges to cross the river here.
