Visitors walking along the Seattle waterfront might see an unobtrusive maritime monument attached to an anchor and mounted on a concrete railing between Fire Station No. 5 and Ivar's Famous Fish Restaurant. This particular monument's metal plaque contains an inscription that says the following:
HISTORICAL POINT OF INTEREST
Here at the turn of the century the Puget Sound Navigation Co., under the leadership of Joshua Green, pioneered our vast ferry system and so contributed materially to the growth of Seattle. Here also in 1888 the "City of Seattle" began regular ferry service to West Seattle.
Erected National Maritime Day 1958
I found a nice article from HistoryLink.org that highlights the history of the ferry service here along the waterfront over the years.
It should also be noted that the Washington State Ferries service contains the largest fleet of passenger and automobile ferries in the United States and the third largest in the world. You can read more about this accomplishment and waymark it here.
