Dr. Robert Day was former president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
(FHCRC) and this statue bust commemorates his likeness near a very tall metal and glass sculpture. There is an inscription below Dr. Day's bust that says:
Dr. Robert W. Day,
President and Director of the
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
from 1981 to 1997,
guided the Center to its stature
as a world-renowned research institution.
His vision, leadership and dedication
led to the establishment of this campus,
where the Center's science
will continue to thrive.
I found a link from the samafoundation.org (Science and Management of Addictions, or SAMA) website that gives a very good bio on Dr. Day's past and present professional career.
It should also be mentioned that the Hutchinson Center hasn't been without controversy. I also discovered an article from the Seattle Times published in 2002 that covers a number of lawsuits that families of deceased patients of the Center had filed that alleged an 'uninformed consent' issue involving numerous leukemia experiments and other cancer-related experiments conducted by the Center. All but one or two patients from those experiments have since died. Dr. Day was mentioned as a defendent in the lawsuits since he was the then-president and director of the Center during those experiments that were conducted in the mid-80s. I don't know what became of the lawsuits filed.
