The Basilica of H.H. Agatha and Barbara was built between 1867 and 1880 as a replacement for an earlier Gothic church. Pastor Hellemons who gave the order had been studying in Rome and wished a smaller copy of the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican to be build.
The front of the building was copied from the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, also in Rome.
Architects were P.J.H. Cuypers and G.J. van Swaay.
The building measures 81 x 55 x 63 meters which makes it 16 times smaller than the original.
In 1912 Pope Pius X exalted the basilica of Oudenbosch to 'Basilica Minor'.
