The H2O Seafood Restaurant on the edge of a big new commercial development area of Port Arthur is a surprise -- it looked like fine-dining through the window, but inside it was more of a casual dining place that could be upscaled if you wanted more elegance for an event.
Dirty, hungry, wet, sandy, frozen geocachers in lots of layers and dorky hats were warmly welcomed and fed huge platters of delicious hot grilled seafood, all freshly prepared on site, and all locally sourced from the Gulf of Mexico 10 miles away.
The homemade sourdough bread is shaped in a bakery but baked on-site at the restaurant. The crust is light, crunchy, and wonderful -- warming cold hands and hungry tummies of a cold windy caching day on the coast.
Blaster girls especially loved our waitress, who without being asked brought an extra bowl of homemade croutons to split with a shared salad. The waitress laughed when the girls were so delighted, telling them, "I'm a mom. I know the best part of a salad is the croutons!"
The mashed sweet potatoes they aerve here are to DIE FOR. They are not the healthy variety, but are laden with butter and brown sugar before stiff-peak egg whites are carefully folded in to the mixture. These sweet potatoes are sinfully rich and ehtereally light -- more like a mousse than a vegetable. They don't even need marshmallows!
We recommend this place very highly. Most of the other seafood restaurants in Port Arthur are mom-and-pop convenience stores with wonky hours and that only serve fried fish as a secondary business. None of these places were open on a Sunday, except to sell the C-store merchandise.
H2O seafood takes care with their fresh proteins, preparing them simply and deliciously. We will be back!
