From the San Diego Coast Life web page:
Located in Leucadia, Beacons Beach is probably best known for its surfing. Surfers are willing to walk up an down the bluff trail to get to the waves. On the maps, it's “Leucadia State Beach,” but ask the locals, and they will just say, “It’s always been Beacons Beach. Even the sign at the top of the bluff reads Beacons."
While parents bring their kids and tots to beacons, this beach is not the most ideal family spot. Besides the hillside climb and limited parking, there are no restrooms or other amenities. The tradeoff is the relative isolation. The beach almost never gets crowded, even on holidays, and the traffic is many local, with most tourists going to the beaches to the north and south.
Beacons Beach is hidden below an tall ocean bluffs, making it a secluded haven for surfers and other beachgoers. At the top of the bluff is a parking lot with a dirt trail winding down the side of the cliff. From the parking lot is a great view of the surfers riding the waves, boats on the horizon, and a beautiful sunset.
Swimming, surfing, walking, jogging, fishing and picnicking are popular activiites at Beacons Beach. A reef is located off Beacons, which makes the beach a nice surf spot.
The beach is very secluded and can be the starting point of a nice hike up or down the coast during low tide.
