The Marble Church was designed by Ferdinand Meldahl and was opened on August 19, 1894. The dome of the Marble Church was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is the largest dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31 meters.

The dome rests on 12 columns and the cupola is split into 12 equal sections each of which is decorated with a painting of an angel, a bas-relief circle, and a painting of one of the twelve apostles.
