Time has taken its toll on this once beautiful polychrome brick brewery complex. Built in 1905 by Chicago architect H. Eilenberger & Co., the decorative parapet on the roof and the arched doors of this Richardsonian style building remain, but the windows are boarded, and the historic structure paints a picture of neglect. The Virginia Bewing Company is listed on the Manfred Friedrich and Donald Bull’s Register of United States Breweries 1876 to 1976, but there is a notation that the brewery was shut down during Prohibition. Later the building was used by Mayflower and Iron Range Moving and Storage; it can be easily found near the blue water tower. This striking building was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1980, but its role as an area brewery appears to have come to an end.
