This bronze Japanese temple bell was given to the Weyerhaeuser Co. for the state of Washington by the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun in 1990. At the time, Yomiuri Shimbun was one of the biggest customers of North Pacific Paper Corp, a newsprint mill in Longview WA that was a joint venture of Weyerhaeuser and Jujo Paper Co. Ltd. of Japan.
Yosoji Kobayashi is president of Nippon Television Network Corp, which owns the newspaper. Weyerhaeuser commissioned the Alaska yellow cedar canopy from which the bell hangs.
The commemorative words cast into the bell read:
YOSOJI KOBAYASHI
PRESIDENT
THE YOMIURI SHIMBUN
JANUARY 1990
