On 5 August 1888, Bertha Benz started her journey, accompanied by her children only, in Mannheim. She was the driver of a Benz automobile newly constructed by her husband and wanted to prove that a long dinstance ride is possible with this. In Wiesloch, between Mannheim and Pforzheim the Ligroin (Petroleum ether) she used as fuel got short. Ligroin was available at pharmacies only, so she stopped at the Wiesloch pharmacy to purchase some. Mr. Ockel had 3 liter only for her, but this was sufficient enought to continue to Pforzheim. This was the first long dinstance journey with a Benz automobile prototype and the first filling station stop ever!
